Hello,

Q6600 @ Stock
Asus Maximus Formula mobo w/ Supreme FXii sound card
4GB 800mhz Crucial Ballistix ram
XFX 5770 @ stock
Seagate Barracuda 500 GB 7200 rpm
700W OCZ psu

Recently I have been having troubles with starting my pc, which I suspect has been caused by recently flashing my motherboard to the latest bios. (However I have tried flashing to three earlier bios versions but it doesn't resolve the problem)

When starting the pc the motherboard lights, cmos light and sound card all flash on and off quickly and the pc will not start. To get the pc to become stable and light up solid, I almost need to bump start the pc by holding in the power/reset buttons on the motherboard (Which is extremely annoying). Once the pc is powered on, everything seems stable enough, but when shutting the pc down the motherboard lights flash for a while then revert back to being solid lights and can then boot.

I have tried using the lcd poster issued with the board and I get a 'CPUINIT' error. I have searched for a while and the problem seems to have no specific cause, but as the error message implies it looks like the cpu is having trouble initializing.

I'm not sure if there is something wrong with the cpu /other components or it is bios related.

Any help would be appreciated!

Make sure that the power button is not jamming on due to a sticky mechanism. You should also check to make sure that there is not a short in the system somewhere. Another possibility is that a self powered USB device is supplying power to the motherboard keeping it in a semi active state. This can cause issues for some motherboards.

Appreciate the reply:
I've tried booting without no peripherals plugged it, but it's still the same.
I am thinking about breadboxing the pc, but again I'm confused on what is actually causing the cpu issues, so I can replace it.

Upon looking in everest I can see that different ram are running at different speeds/timings and I'm pretty sure the ram is matched modules.

I don't know if this could be causing issues? I.E I see here that there are voltages at 1.8 and 2.2(I'm not sure what is the corrects volts), but the ram is supposed to run native @ 2.2. Maybe the ram is undervolted causing instability?

I doubt your CPU is the issue. It is most likely either your RAM or your BIOS not been able to recognize the RAM. Those are crazy RAM readings. If the RAM is matched as you say you most likely have Motherboard / BIOS issues.

I'm guessing that the problem is indeed the ram causing instability. Also I have just realised that there is no beep on post, should I be worried about this? I don't understand what parameters are altered by repeatedly pressing the power button on the mobo for it to successfully boot, it's very strange.

Before I replace the ram, is there a way to fix the current modules? I have just set the ram to 800mz and 2.2v in the bios but there is no change in cpu-z/everest.

I think that it is your BIOS causing the problems in that it is not reading the RAM correctly. If you can swap out the RAM and it is all good then it is the RAM. However if your modules are matched and the problem surfaced after BIOS upgrades the problem is likely Motherboard / BIOS related. It is not beeping as it is not passing the RAM test. Repeated boots may be kicking it into some form of life but obviously that is not a desirable situation.

Have you tried booting with one RAM stick at a time? This could isolate the problem. It may be that one of your sticks has somehow failed.

Tried booting with one stick and no sticks at all, but it doesn't solve the problem.
The problem is, I have no way of knowing if it's the psu, motherboard or the cpu itself. :(
Breadboxing atm, will post pictures soon just incase there is something physically wrong that anyone can point out.

No luck I'm afraid, tried just plugging the psu into the mobo and booting with one stick.

Last picture shows the lights flashing, with the 'CPUINIT' error on the lcd poster.
Very frustrating, I have no clue what is causing the problem so I can replace it.

Any ideas? :??:

This page lends weight to my theory your System BIOS is at fault. Check out the advice on it. It may work for you. Also try this thread for another theory on the error.
