Monitor signal issue, 2 PCs, 1 laptop, big mess. Please advise!

Hello,

I built a brand new rig with an Asus M3A87TD motherboard and everything appeared to be fine. But I'm not getting a video signal to my monitor, via a GTX-470. The rig has never had an HDD or DVD-Rom installed.

I've tested two monitors, DVI, VGA and both appear to be in sleep mode. If I unplug the DVI cable, the monitor wakes up and claims there is not a cable connected.

I plugged both monitors into a laptop as a secondary video output and they functioned perfectly.

I used an older tower that had both onboard video and an AGP video card, but the same sleep mode problem arose. No video signal.

Am I looking at "coincidence" in two fried motherboards, video cards or? I'm terribly confused and would appreciate any insight.

Switch parts out if you just built it there is a chance you got a component DOA.
If the processor is bad it wont post.
If the gpu is bad it wont show anything but you will hear it run and I'm not talking about the fans.

This applies to you testing your monitors on another pc.
FYI, Also for the monitors you have to enable them as a secondary display in windows other wise it wont get a signal.

I apologize if I didn't elaborate appropriately.

I have two different monitors that only work when plugged into a laptop. Previously either monitor worked successfully alone or as a dual monitor setup, with my older tower.

Now, neither my older tower nor the new tower are outputting signal to anything. Neither monitor in any setup will result in a monitor getting signal. The only time a monitor gets signal is if it's plugged into an older laptop via VGA.

Is there anyway I can tell if I have a bogus motherboard or a bogus video card? I don't have an extra pci-e card, nor a compatible motherboard ( or any friends with home built computers ).

The fact that I'm having the same problem with two different PCs made me think it wasn't a problem with the PCs, but like I said before, maybe it's just coincidence. Argh!
 
Do you see boot messages on the screen as either system boots? Because all of this happens before the OS is loaded, it is completely independent of settings.

Not seeing boot messages in both systems means that both systems are broken if the monitor has been tested on a third system.

I have tested the following beep patterns on Gigabyte, eVGA, and ECS motherboards. Other BIOS' may be different, but they all use a single short beep for a successful POST.

Breadboard - that will help isolate any kind of case problem you might have.

Make sure you plug the CPU power cable in. The system will not boot without it.

I always breadboard a new build. It takes only a few minutes, and you know you are putting good parts in the case once you are finished.

You can turn on the PC by momentarily shorting the two pins that the case power switch goes to. You should hear a series of long, single beeps indicating memory problems. Silence indicates a problem with (in most likely order) the PSU, motherboard, or CPU. Remember, at this time, you do not have a graphics card installed so the load on your PSU will be reduced.

If no beeps:
Running fans and drives and motherboard LED's do not necessarily indicate a good PSU. In the absence of a single short beep, they also do not indicate that the system is booting.

At this point, you can sort of check the PSU. Try to borrow a known good PSU of around 550 - 600 watts. That will power just about any system with a single GPU. If you cannot do that, use a DMM to measure the voltages. Measure between the colored wires and either chassis ground or the black wires. Yellow wires should be 12 volts. Red wires: +5 volts, orange wires: +3.3 volts, blue wire : -12 volts, violet wire: 5 volts always on. Tolerances are +/- 5% except for the -12 volts which is +/- 10%.

The gray wire is really important. It should go from 0 to +5 volts when you turn the PSU on with the case switch. CPU needs this signal to boot.

You can turn on the PSU by completely disconnecting the PSU and using a paperclip or jumper wire to short the green wire to one of the neighboring black wires.

Working from the back of the plug where the wires come out, use a bare paperclip to short between the green wire and one of the neighboring black wires. That will do the same thing with an installed PSU. It is also an easy way to bypass a questionable case power switch.

This checks the PSU under no load conditions, so it is not completely reliable. But if it can not pass this, it is dead. Then repeat the checks with the PSU plugged into the computer to put a load on the PSU.

If it looks like the PSU is good, install a memory stick. Boot. Beep pattern should change to one long and several short beeps indicating a missing graphics card.

Here's a idea get a dvi to vga converter (One should of come with your card if not they are not expensive) and plug in the monitors in that way, this is just to eliminate the dvi ports on your monitor being bad.
