Dell insprion 2500 HELP sound and touchpad

I have recently got hold of a dell inspiron 2500. After replacing the
hard drive and loading windows xp both the sound and touchpad fail to
function.

I have installed a usb mouse andheadphones and everything there works
fine.

Can anyone offer any advice to get the touchpad and the sound working
on this laptop. Have checked everything is installed in devices and
all seems to be showing and fine ???
