Corsair Vengeance 2x4gb compatibility with rampage extreme x48

I purchased a set of Vengeance 8gb (2x4gb) @ 1600mhz 9-9-9-24 recently and I was wondering if it is possible to install them on an asus rampage extreme x48.
The mobo user manual indicates that it can only support up to 2gb per slot. Is it a chipset limitation in general or could asus have changed it's compatibility with higher capacity ram dimms?
