Hello

I am building a new SB computer, what should I do with my Dell XPS 420?
Can it still be useful? Should I keep a good video card in there?

I will use computer for gaming and 2-D and 3-D animation and design.

What do you have in the Dell XPS 420? They came equipped lots of different ways.

It has a Q6600 and 4 gigs of ram and a GTS 250( I added that recently)

Until I can get the SB i7200k and the mb, I am going to put a bigger psu and a GTX 570 and later move the psu and gpu to the SB build.

So I can add to the Dell.

I think that's reasonable. The Q6600 is still a great CPU.

Have you measured to confirm the GTX 570 will fit? 10.5" needed

I'm pretty sure the 9800 GTX fit and that was also 10.5"
But it wouldnt hurt to open it up and check... and check the position and clearance/position of the PCI-e power connectors for possible obstructions.

The Gigabyte GV-N570D5-13I-B.

What would be a good 300-500 dollar workstation Nvidia card?

I think you could give that GTX 570 a shot at workstation duty. See how well it performs. What applications are running on the workstation?

The Gigabyte GV-N570D5 PCI-e power plugs on the top side and not sticking out the back. That's good for being able to fit into tight spaces.

How many fans does that XPS 420 case have?

None now but games, WOW, Starcraft 2 demo. Will get the Starcraft 2 game and others. Software planning to use is 3-D program and a 2-D animation program.

2, one blowing out the back and one blowing air away from the cpu thru the front of the case.
