I'm looking to take the plunge and build my first Desktop. My budget is around $500. I will be using it for Gaming, Net Surfing, Movies, Music and the like. Typical stuff. I know it's low for gaming, but I don't need eye popping graphics, running a game on low is fine, I'm from the 8-bit era at the ripe old age of 27. So running new games well is more important than graphics.

Don't need a monitor or OS, nor input devices. This is my thinking so far... I think it all plugs together, but thought I should be sure. Also It all adds up to 352 dollars if my math is right, which leaves me room for upgrading a few parts.

Also I would like advice on a PSU, since I don't want to fry it.

Advice and thoughts appreciated! Thanks!

For a little more power you may want to consider this.

It has one less core but it is really fast, and has newer technology so you won't need that extra core! Plus if you know a bit about PC's you can unlock this to 4 cores easily! it has L3 cache witch will be great for photo story, and web searching at fast speeds! $90

This case is very nice looking! it is sturdy, and has awesome airflow, and for 5 dollars more it is worth your time!

That graphics card will play all of your games at 50-70 fps at mid settings so don't sweet it! Plus that graphics card will help your CPU do task faster, and more efficiently thanks to ATI STREAM TECHNOLOGY!

But the choice is up to you...

Here is a power supply for you: OCZ StealthXstream II OCZ600SXS2 600W for $45 after rebate and promo including shipping. Cash outlay is $69 It has a few extra watts, but the price sure is right.

This hard drive performs nearly as well, and is $10 cheaper: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB for $50.

Seems like you have some extra money in your budget. Suggest upgrading the video card to this: HIS H685F1GD Radeon HD 6850 1GB for for $152 after rebate and promo including shipping Cash outlay is $176

That leaves you at $410 net, $459 total cash before rebates. Sound good?

Also this is a good power supply XFX Core Edition PRO550W

For this basic build it will not be an over kill for your system! It is mid ranged, has 80 plus bronze so is pretty power efficient no matter the workload! It is a little bit more power than what you need but you said you wanted to up-grade so this is really great for you!

Thanks for the input guys. I'll switch the Processor, the Video card, and the case. I prefer a WD HD. Also the Video Card recommended is a PCI Express 2.1 x16. But the Mobo has PCI Express 2.0 x16. Does that .1 make a difference? I guess I'm asking if they are able to work together. I know computers can be stubborn on things like that.

And is a 500 or 550 watt PSU good for this build? Or maybe a higher watt is needed?

Thanks again!
