I have the floppy screen problem where the hinge pins rotate inside the
screen housing. If new hinges would solve it, I'd do it in an instant. All
the replacement hinges I've seen on e-bay, and places like that, aren't the
type I have. They have a vertical piece where mine are strictly horizontal.

I think I know the scenario. Compaq probably started out with a 14" screen.
Some marketing genius decided to offer a 15" screen. The bezel had to shrink
to accommodate the new screen and the display got heavier. And they had to
trim the hinges too. Perfect.

Anyway, after two bouts of epoxy, and one bout of crazy glue nothing has
succeeded in anchoring the rotating bits to the screen housing. About the
only thing would be to pin the shafts to the casing. A nice job, drilling a
small diameter hole into a curved surface. Forget it.

A new screen would solve the problem. $2100 CDN from Compaq, and anywhere
from $400 to $700 US from other sources.

I'm resigned to using a mechanical prop. Too bad, a perfectly functioning
laptop; I use it for wirelessly roaming about the house, travelling, and
video capture. Oh well, however long it lasts I will prop the screen. At
least now I can remove the screen blindfolded after taking it off and
putting it on so many times.

Try Gorilla Glue. If used properly (wet one surface and use sparingly), I
have found it works better than anything else on disparate materials with a
small surface area.

Those are the wrong hinges based on the OP's description.

This will be small comfort, I know, but all I can say is to keep checking
eBay for the hinges, they'll turn up.

I recently went through exactly the same problem with my DIL's 1710US. Wound
up buying a parts machine and sold the "extra" parts to recoup my money.

Or, you could buy them from Compaq. IIRC, they only wanted about _$300_ for
them!!!!

James

Thanks for the heads up. I wish I could use them. If you cut off the
vertical posts on those, you'd have approximately what my hinges looks like.
Those probably go with the 14" screen and they actually screw into the
screen housing. If only!

Thanks for the tip. If I get brave, I'll give it a try.

You're right, the e-bay ones aren't for me. What would be great is finding
someone with a blown mobo and a good screen which they'd part with for a
reasonable sum. However, probably any unit with a moderate use would have
the same problem. Just baa-a-a-a-d design.
