'Contour' colour lines on screen

Hi Guys

Basically, when i look at videos or pictures containing light colours on a black background, i get what appear to be lines of colours visible to me on the screen.

The screen is a Samsung SyncMaster BX2450, back-lit LED with 60hz refresh rate and 1920 x 1080 resolution. Plugged into my GTS 250 via HDMI cable (a relatively cheap one though)

Any ideas as to why this appears and what i can do to prevent it?

Remove the HDMI cable and Plug the monitor and GPU into each other using a DVI cable and see if the issue goes away.
