I am trying to set up a Dell Inspiron-1000 as a dual boot system with
Win-2K and Mandrake 10.1.

I'm not exactly a Linux expert, but as near as I can tell, the Mandrake
OS seems to be working OK in command-line mode. However I can't get
the X-window GUI to work.

During installation, the Installer seems to be recognizing the chipset
correctly (SiS-650) and I selected "Dell 1048x768 Laptop" for the
monitor. And I tried various combinations of resolution and color
depth, but the Test display is never readable; and if I boot up in
command line mode and type "startx", I get error messages.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated, Thanks in Advance.

Well, we would need to *see* those error messages. As for resolution,
you must set it for the physical resolution of your TFT display. They
typically don't really do well in other resolution settings.

Look for the XFree.0.log or Xorg.0.log file in */var/log* for more
information.

To reconfigure your graphical environment from within the character mode
environment, type *XFdrake* at the command prompt - mind the case!
