Approximate Purchase Date: this week, can wait for the right part/offer

Budget Range: ~£300 pounds, will go higher if lower power justifies.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: 24x7 backup server for 1 desktop and 3 laptops, run various light personal web services (eg photo album), ideally cope with playing hdmi 1080p/media centre . No games necessary.

Parts Not Required: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, OS (will use linux), won't bother with dvd, ideally won't need to buy and power and graphics card. Will not RAID the backup files, machine will also rsync to another machine elsewhere.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: www.ebuyer.com ? not fussed.

Country of Origin: UK

Parts Preferences: I think I'll have to rule out atom/fusion builds due to the media playing part, though very tempted by ACER Revo 3700 at 184 quid and just plug in a big external storage)

On balance, I'm looking for the lowest power "normal" solution without a big ramp up in either price or power usage.

Overclocking: No (maybe under!)

SLI or Crossfire: No

Monitor Resolution: 1280/1024 is fine. More's a bonus, will often remote in anyway.

Additional Comments: I'm looking to minimise cost. My basic maths tells me every extra watt at 24x7x3years costs about £3 at today's energy prices and will probably rise, so I'm looking to optimise (£CPU+£MOBO+£Energy @light but not idle load). I think most solutions will be ample for the work load. My one worry is the graphics side, and being the part used the least that it doesn't add too significantly to power / cost.

Also, any makes particularly better than others on the power front? Or do they spin down pretty well when not in use these days and it's irrelevant?

You can either get an energy efficient dual core like this one

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-athlon-ii-x2-245e-energy-efficient-dual-core-s-am3-29ghz-2mb-cache-45w-retail
+ a mobo with onboard video

or get the new Zacate, better than the Atom, only 18W:

Then you get the other parts accodrdingly.
