Why do all new graphics cards have so much video memory, can someone give me an example of how much memory is required for gaming, regular use, HD video on monitors of different resolutions and multiple monitors?

How much would I need for gaming on a 1680x1050 monitor with a GT 240, do I need the 1GB of DDR3 memory or should I go for the 512MB GDDR5 which is the same price as 1GB DDR3?

The higher the resolution in games, the more VRAM there should be since more textures need to be loaded. However some cards are not powerful enough to use the extra VRAM. For example, there is no performance difference between the HD 5670 512MB and the HD 5670 1GB. Well... okay maybe at best 1 extra frame. Slower HD 5xxx cards will not benefit from extra VRAM as well.

Between 1GB of DDR3 and 512MB of DDR5, I would choose DDR5 due to the faster transfer rate. But generally speaking starting at 1680 x 1050 I would go for 1GB of VRAM. Therefore, 1GB of DDR5 would be ideal.

Regular use and HD video won't really care.

I have 2GB DDR2 (400MHz) RAM, could that possibly bottleneck the GDDR5 memory rendering it useless?

VRAM and system RAM are a bit different since they run on different interfaces.

What's more important is the CPU. If the CPU is too slow then that can bottleneck your video card's performance. A GT 240 is not a fast video card in the grand scheme of things though.

2GB of system RAM is decent for Windows XP, but a little low for Win Vista or Win 7.

1gb with ddr3 is just sick.even with ddr5 gt 240 is not powerful enough.why not you buy a 9800gt or 8800gt.they are quite cheap now and much better than gt 240s.they have directx10 and physx!what more you need?

I have a 300w power supply, the 9800GTX and 8800GTX require 400-450w and I can't find the 59w version of the 9600GT.
