Maxtor unknown device troubleshoot windows vista 07

Hello,
I own a maxtor one touch4 plus. As of recently it has worked perfect. Out of no where my computer started saying the USB drive is unrecognizable. It won't even show me that the Maxtor is connected. I don't know what to do, but I need to access the files on my external drive ASAP. Please help.
