Computer to run VMs

I'm looking to buy or build a system. I'm not interested in playing games but I would like it to be able to run 1 or even 2 vmware workstations, ideally with very little performance hit running 1. My budget is up to £1200. I already have a good monitor so that can be factored out. Any advice would be much appreciated.

What sort of guests will you be running?

Do you mean performance hit in the guest or host?
