Hi,
I am putting together a CPU build for the first time and am going with a GTX570 and a 1200p 24 in. monitor.
I figured if I am spending near 600 bucks to have a nice visual experience why not spend a little to have a nice audio experience.

I have numerous questions.

But first, I definately want surround sound. I play FPS mostly, so this is my number one concern. Second, (and this is what makes it hard) I need headphones. No speakers.... which is why I am coming to you. Now, I don't have the money to put 150 into a true 5.1 or 7.1 headphone set, which I hear arent that good anyway.

I want to use a Soundcard to take a 2.0 signal and convert it to a 5.1 or, even better, a 7.1

1) Which is better?
Dolby Pro Logic II, or Creative 3D? Or anything else that would do the job :D  I think Neo 6 is another....

2) What soundcard would you recommend that has the technology? The PCI slots on my board will not be available if I do SLI down the road, so a PCIe would be ideal. Not a complete dealbreaker though...

3) What would you recommend as far as headphones?
I was thinking about the Razor Orcas. Now I know they aren't Senns, or Audio Technica, but they are getting absolutely stellar reviews.

My priorities for the soundcard and cans are

1) Surround Sound Gaming. Like I could close my eyes while playing BFBC, and shoot people using my ears. Environmental, 3D, positional sound
2) Musical Clarity and Accuracy
3) Bass ( I like rap :pt1cable:  )

Budget is $150 absolute max, really aiming in that 100 dollar range, maybe 50 for the cad and 50 for the cans?

Thank you so much for your help!

Some new info.

New sound card surround technology to add to the list
Dolby Headphone vs Neo 6 vs Dolby Pro Logic II vs Creative 3D

I have selected some sound cards for comparision. I tried to stay under $50 as to spend more on the cans.

Xonar DG $28, uses Dolby Headphone, 5.1, 96 KHz
Xonar DS $47, uses Neo 6, 7.1, 192 KHz

Ya.... that is all I got. Suggestions are very welcome

I also came up with another question.
With this surround sound virtualization software, should I use 5.1 or 7.1 to play through my stereo headphones? I believe Dolby Headphones only does 5.1, whereas Neo 6 does up to 7.1.

I have banned gaming headphones from my mind.... I don't know what I was thinking at the time. I mean I moved from your standard set of earbuds to some Klipsch S4's, and the difference was huge. I don't know why I didn't think the same applies to headphones. Hell, it probably applies even more.

So, I have come up with numerous cans. Before stating these I would like to say open cans, such as the AT 700's, are not going to work for me. I think surround speakers are better for gaming than cans. The only reason, IMO, you would use headphones over a surround speaker set-up would be to not annoy your family members at 2 AM. Which is the reason I am doing it. So before you make any suggestions, it has to be closed cans.

Senn HD280 Pro $100
Sony MDR-V600 $85
Sony MDR-V6 $75
JVC HA-RX900 $70
Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs $82

Remember, surround sound comes before musical clarity.

Anyone know the difference between the Sonys? The V6 has more resistence, which would lead me to believe it is the studio version, however that is not the case. That is the only difference I say as far as acoustics is concerned. Same size driver, same power handling, same response and sensitivity, probably same exact drivers.

Thank you!

Well,

Decided on the Asus DG, JVC RX700, and a mic. Was considering the HD280, but in the end, I want bang for the buck, and the RX700's are better suited to my music. I listen to Lil' Wayne, not Bach.

Anways, I don't know why I am wasting the time to tell you guys this.

Yeah it has been like 4 days FYI.

And 100+ views.

Just came back on to see what you guys will say.

At least the views on this thread have gone up. Too bad you need to make a scene to get some attention.

Anyways, 100+ views and apparently a mod hasn't seen it yet, as it still exists, which is sad in its self.

Yep,

Fuuuuuuck you
