This has been going on for a while now. It only happens in some games but it is doing it more frequently now.

I will be playing lets say Rift and all of a sudden the game will freeze, audio will repeat itself and then stop after a while. I can't ctrl-alt-delete or anything, all of it is unresponsive, only thing I can do is hold the power button and manually shut it down.

What was happening before is that when it froze, green/red squares would pop up all over the screen, like large pixels. I thought it might be a problem with one of my video cards. Turns out that in fact one of my video-cards was overheating big-time(like 70-90celsius sometimes) in some games. I removed this card and started just using one, the problem continued, so I decided I would try playing Rift in windowed mode.

That seem to fix the problem for about a week, I went on vacation, came back, and today after playing for about 3-4 hours it froze up again. Only this time, there are no green spots showing up on the screen and the audio isn't repeating. My card is NOT overheating(gpu is running at 50 celsius idle on the desktop and then sitting at about 56-60 celsius in game depending on where I am and how much stuff is going on in front of me.

My spec

CPU: Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 running @ 2.40GHz
RAM: 1 x ADATA 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
GPU: Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT
Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Sound: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
OS: Windows Vista 64-bit Ultimate

All drivers are up to date except for the Motherboard's BIOS. Did a fresh install of Vista as well and have all windows updates. Problem still continues.

This sounds like a case of a dying component. Its mostly the video card. If you have any friend around who can give you his video card for testing and/or be good enough to test your video card then it will be great. On a side note, have you checked the temps for all the components (motherboard, processor)? In case no then please do that as well.

Thats what it looks like after about 20 minutes of playing RIFT.

40 minutes after gameplay: http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/9759/rifthardwaremon...
