hello

i recently bought a Radeon 6950 and its bottlenecking like hell on my crappy Phenom x4 9650.

so i was thinking of getting a Phenom 2 x4 970 would this still bottleneck the GPU and if so would it be my much?

thats the best CPU i can get on my old Board am also running 6GB DDR2 800Mhz! would this be good enough with that CPU And GPU?

thanks for the advice

More about : phenom 970 radeon 6950

Get a X4 955 instead of the X4 970 and with the saved money get a nice heatsink like the Cm Hyper 212+ and OC the 955 to 3.8GHz, you should be fine. Just make sure you have a good mobo, and a quality PSU.
Also post the exact specs of your RAM.

thanks for the reply.

the 955 was on my mind but am kind of new at overclocking but not to say that i cant do it.

the motherboard i have is a Gigabyte MA790GP-DS4H With A Corsair 750w

The Ram is OCZ Gold Series PC2-6400 5-5-5@1.9v

i dont think upgrading it to 1066 would be much of an improvement?

again thanks for the help.

PSU is great, MB and RAM are also very good. You should have no problem OC'ing it :)

thanks.

ive just bought the new CPU 955 installed it and done a few benchmarks and tested afew games and there is only a small improvement.

am getting about 30FPS in a game called world of tanks something must be bottlenecking me and i cant think what it is

am getting a really low score on 3Dmark 11 aswell graphics score of only 4450.

could anyone help me here?

You should be able to max any game so something isn't right what resolution are you playing at and whats your full system spec. Have you run any game benchmarks?

i play at 1650 x 1050

OS - Windows 7 64bit
Mainboard - GA-MA790GP-DS4H
CPU - Phenom x4 955
GPU - Radeon 9650
Ram - 6GB DDR2 PC6400 800mhz
PSU - Cosair 750w

GPU drivers fully up to date DX11

am just about to try GTA 4 as i remember my 4870 used to struggle with high settings.

yes bios is fully up to date and checking all temps everything seems ok.

i just tried GTA 4 maxed out all of the settings and the game played fine which is a huge increase from my 4870 but i dont know if thats just because of the GPU and not the CPU

i may of just spent £100 on a CPU i didnt need :(

nahhhh ...

Your AM3 CPU will move forward into a new motherboard, and is quite a step up from the ol' original Phenom x4 9650.

Have you added an OC? You may also want to bump the IMC/NB to 2400MHz+
