Approximate Purchase Date: Within the next month or so.

Budget Range: Thinking $1000-$1250 range or possibly up to $1500 if getting an ssd for a boot drive

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Lots of torrenting (relax, it's mostly audience recordings at live shows where taping is allowed), CD/DVD burning, music/video streaming, general web browsing. I tend to have a lot of applications running at the same time.

Parts Not Required: Have a decent pair of speakers so that's not a crucial need (would love suggestions if you do have them though). Everything else is a need.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: I use newegg.com for most of my computer needs but I'm open to using other sites.

Country of Origin: U.S.

Parts Preferences: I think that I would like to build the system around the Intel i5-2500. I don't game so I'm guessing the 2500k would just be overkill. Right?

Overclocking: Doubtful

SLI or Crossfire: Doubtful, but maybe one day if needed.

Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080. Also, I don't need a huge monitor b/c my desk is VERY shallow. The back of the keyboard will almost be touching the monitor stand. Would probably prefer something name-brand (e.g., LG, Samsung, ASUS, etc.) with a well made stand (not wobbly).

Additional Comments: I have been eyeing the COOLER MASTER CM690 II Advanced case. I'm up for other suggestions but I'm really liking this one a lot for some reason. Also, I need a good amount of reliable storage (to store lots and lots of lossless music, plus my pictures and other stuff). I'm considering some type of RAID setup but I'd have to look more into that (never done it before). Also, I have heard great things about using a ssd for the OS. In your opinion, would it be worth it? If I do go this route, what size would I need? Would an 80GB X25-M work? Thanks in advance! I've already learned quite a bit browsing these forums, though I know I still have quite a lot to learn.

Hello swords22;

Excellent job laying out your requirements.
Sounds like a i5 2500 with H67 motherboard and integrated video would be ideal for you.
Should be no problem getting a nice SSD boot drive and large HDD into the mix and within in your budget.

Core i5-2500 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 1155 95W Quad-Core CPU
BIOSTAR TH67+ 1155 H67 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Motherboard combo deal with RAM
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 RAM kit F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL

Thank you very much, WR2! I almost chickened out of building my own and bought a self-configured build off of CyberPower. I'm now more determined than ever to build my own. I'm ready to purchase my components but wanted to do one last check to make sure that everything works. I took WR2's advice on some stuff but I really want to get the CM690 II so I changed that and picked a different power supply. I also picked a different HDD and plan to get two of them (will do a RAID 1 setup). I'm taking WR2's advice on the SSD but I think I will go up to the 128 GB C300 from Amazon.com b/c it's a little cheaper than newegg.

So is this still a good build? Do you recommend that I make any changes? And finally, do I need anything else to do a RAID 1 setup with two hard drives?

Swords, it looks like you have a good build. You are really going to enjoy the performance that you get from the Intel® Core™ I5 2500K. After far as the difference between ATX and MicroATX it all comes down to size and the number of slots that you will be using. So since you most likely won’t be using SLI/Crossfire then an MicroATX board should do what you need.
