Hi there!

I got the idea of what to do when I bought my intel e6600. I got a motherboard that was able to be overclocked to 1600MHZ (400mhz FSB) and a dual memory of 800MHZ so I got the 1:1 relationship that I wanted.

Now with the I7, memories of 1600, 2000 mhz and so on, I am lost again (I am no hard core techie as you can imagine, but I got an idea...)

So what RAM + Motherboard combination should I get?

Motherboards that claim to support 1600MHZ go with 1600MHZ DD3 ram? Do we still have to divide by 4 one, by 2 the other and so on and so forth?

Thanks a lot !!!!!

ps. A recommendation of a couple of good motherboards would be great too.
all I got so far is:

P8P67 PRO (REV 3.0)
P67 EXTREME6 (B3)
SABERTOOTH P67 (REV 3.0) (I read about the Thermal Armor issue)
P8P67 DELUXE (REV 3.0)

Check out this motherboard, its reasonably priced, has all the hardware features you could want, but minus some of the small things like the asus Republic of gamers stuff. Plus Z68 so you can use those small features of the integrated graphics while also maintaining the ability to overclock.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128498

And the new i7 2600k doesn't have FSB anymore, it uses something called DMI to directly connect, so I would recommend forgetting the 1:1 ratio and aim for the highest clocked memory you can since Sandy Bridge has ridiculous memory bandwith.

For gaming, I'd go with 8 gb of ram clocked as high as you can go, with a min of 1600 DDR3, and the motherboard you just probably need either a Z68 or P67 chipset, NOT H67, and at least two x16 PCI-e 2.0 slots, either when using sli or Xfire running at x8/x8 or x16/x16, and USB 3.0 and SATAIII, good cooling, and anything beyond that is purely up to you since it's mostly optional.

Hi Dylan,

Thanks for you time mate.
Ok, I checked the mother out (not sure you guys can see the link)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100006519 50001314 40000280&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&ActiveSearchResult=True&CompareItemList=280|13-131-702^13-131-702-TS%2C13-157-231^13-157-231-TS%2C13-131-701^13-131-701-TS%2C13-131-703^13-131-703-TS%2C13-128-498^13-128-498-TS

I added this mobo the the comparison screen. The only issue I see ít is that has video on board that I do't really need so I wish I use that money to get a better mobo.

My ideal would be no video no audio(as in using $$ into a better built) but most seem to include audio anyway.

Not a big deal though.

Money wise (still on mobos) there is not that much difference. I am prepare to pay 200+ for a good mobo...... (Newegg.com unfortunately does not ship to Australia, but it's still good to get an idea)

Ok, I understand then FSB it's not in play anymore. Now what's the difference btw p67 and z68?

RAM: It's very interesting what you said since I thought RAM MHZ was not relevant -for reasons I can't really explain, just quoting others :) - so other opinions will be appreciated ...but it helps a lot since following your advise I can just concentrate on the small group of 2000MHZ memories...saving me time.

Actually look at this:

(AUD)
Desktop DDR3 Ram 8GB Kit (2x4GB) PC3-16000 2000MHz G.Skill F3-16000CL9D-8GBRM $160.00
Desktop DDR3 Ram 8GB Kit (2x4GB) PC3-12800 1600MHz G.Skill F3-12800CL7D-8GBXH $146.00

So 1600mhz CL7 is $146 aussies but for 14 more you get a 2000MHZ CL9...which is best????? following your advise it seems the 2000mhz one..... (a little expensive though)

cheers!

The P67 is the chipset that does not support integrated graphics, which I'm sure doesn't matter to most people, except that it can't use something called Lucid Virtue (Google it, I still have yet to find out what exactly it is. Lol) The Z68 chipset on the other hand CAN use the integrated graphics, like the H67, but can ALSO overclock like the P67, so the Z68 is pretty much a combination of the two, and for the same price. (Also it's about 2-3 months newer than the H67 and P67)

P67 = overclocking
H67 = integrated graphics + lucid virtue
Z68 = overclocking and integrated graphics + lucid virtue

And about RAM, the 1600MHZ one is better by a little bit, but it's not always that way. If you want to compare RAM that you find by factoring in both CAS Latency and frequency, consult this chart: http://www.thetechrepository.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=555&stc=1&d=1186251784. The lower the number, the better. But on my opinion I was assuming that both RAM had the same or plus or minus one CAS Latency digit, so sorry for leaving that part out.

And the one I showed you doesn't have video built in, those are the ports for the integrated graphics built in to the i7 2600k, pretty much useless if you plan on using a dedicated GPU, but it's a nice addition since you get everything you want plus that. But also for your price range, take a look at these, I don't know if you were already considering these but they're very nice and perfect for your needs, unless you want to go $300+ to get the Asus Republic of Gamer motherboards, those have some sweet additions like being able to overclock from your phone or laptop, but it all depends if you think that all the little "extras" are worth the extra $100.

And sorry for using newegg, I just prefer to use it for it's reviews and specs as a way of comparison.

Mate, thanks!

found this:"http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/motherboards/2011/05/13/what-is-the-intel-z68-chipset/4

You have added another level of complexity to it all!! damn! :)))))))

But good! , because I haven't even consider that!!!

Newegg is great. My point it's just that if you live in AuS you have to sort of add 10% to it or more....but great comparison tool, no doubt

Will let you know....
