I don't like them but saw them. At the price, they are insanely good
although you can now get some bare Dells at similar prices if you can
get the discount coupons. I'm surprised at all the amazing reviews. I
personaly am not impressed with the screen. But for the money, if you
need a laptop for $800 it's a bargain to get work done.

I was impressed that they had a metal case which in my
mind will help keep the unit cooler than a laptop with
a plastic case. true?

but if the laptop isn't really designed with 'cooling' in mind (and a lot
of the cheapies aren't), and it happens to be a P4, the laptop won't be
'cool' with either case.

true
but most of the averatec laptops I've seen have power
stingy CPUs

I'll give credit where it's due. Go into a Circuit City recently? I
don't know whose lap these laptops are supposed to sit on but it looks
more like Roseanne Barr's. They are freaking huge and heavy. The art
of the small but reasonably powerfrul portable are gone and Averatec
is one of the few that really does pack a lot into a very small
package.

I agree with you above and that's why the avaretec
caught my eye
Avartec was the only ones that were compact and
portable
All others I looked at in CC and Best Buy looked like
desktop replacement
To my way of thinking Id just as soon have a real
desktop if needing something THAT big. <G>

Sort of - only problems is bits have broken (maybe not that good quality
control?), and as I live outside North America cannot get it fixed under
warrantee. The DVD drive stopped working about 7 months in. I now also have
one key combination working intermittently (Capital T - hah it worked that
time...)
But if I could have got these problems fixed under warrantee I'd still be
happy. Their email customer support isn't too good though (see previous
thread)
But it was good value for money, and I think the screen isn't too bad
really, given it is only 12"

a college student I was meeting with the other day had a huge 'laptop'. I
think it may make sense for people like students who use it during a
semester, can take it home during breaks and vacations - you wouldn't want
to lug a desktop home just for Xmas break.
still, it seemed unnecessarily large and unwieldly. could it even be a
weird advertising point? like saying they can replace desktops because,
look, they are almost as big!

Generally the size is controlled by the display. The larger the display the
larger the laptop.
