The AMD FX series was a disappointment for gamers.
They may be good value for multi threaded apps, but not for gamers who use only two or three fast cores.

As a starting point:
2500K cpu $225 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072

8gb ram kit $37 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231424
Note that sandybridge is insensitive to ram speeds, and 1.5v ram does not need fancy heat spreaders

Any number of Z68 based motherboards will do. Here is a popular one for $130

Total $392.
If you live near a microcenter, check them out. Last I heard, they would sell a 2500K to walk-ins for $180.
