I just got a HP DV4000. Unfortunately, the battery that came with it
sticks out about 3/4" so that the laptop does not really lay flat 
(
I'm "guessing" this is not the 6 cell battery, but the extended 12
cell. How / where can I get the regular battery??

eBay has a crap load of batteries. I know a lot of stores with laptop technicians carry spare batteries, too.
I personally have 2 DV4000 batteries lying around, but unfortunately they're not for sale unless you come up to me in person.
