Hey guys, I am running a single xfx 6970, and I replaced the video card with a gts 450, my board has 3x pci express slots. Can I stuff that gts 450 under my 6970 and get physX out of games? Or is it impossible and I should continue to sell it?

More about : add physx crossfire

You potentially could with a few frowned upon software hacks, but otherwise i don't think so. The latest iterations of Nvidia's products automatically disable themselves as dedicated physx cards when an ATI card is detected in the system.

Physx is over rated anyway, a minor visual improvement at the cost of an extra 10% workload overhead on the GPU.

Look up the GenL hack if you are interested in adding the 450 as a PhysX card.

As far as where to place it goes; I'd recommend two choices to try before putting the 450 directly below the 6970:
1) If the 3rd PCIe slot is 3 slots away from the top slot, use the 450 in that slot. This will give you good breathing room between both cards.

2) If there isn't an extra slot between the two cards for breathing then then try putting the 450 as the top card, with the 6970 just below it. The 6970 is the work horse in your setup, so it should get the cleaner air. This will only work if your BIOS let's you choose which PCIe slot to use as the primary display. Mine let's me, yours might also.

3) If 1 or 2 doesn't work, then do as you originally planned.

Here you go: http://www.ngohq.com/graphic-cards/17706-hybrid-physx-m...

One note, this confused me on this latest patches, the PhysX tab will not show up in the Nvidia panel with the 1.04ff patch, but in their FAQ they mention that this is the case with their current patch. I was able to confirm it works like this as well.

How come you don't mention crossfire anywhere other than the title?

Anyway, just stick the 450 in the 2nd or 3rd slot. Probably won't matter which, although if the 3rd slot is only 4x slot you might see the PhysX card being bottlenecked, which mostly won't matter but it can cause some slow down at certain points in certain games.

But yeah, GenL patch...

Thanks guys, I didn't mention the crossfire in the thread message because I forgot to mention I want to run a crossfire of 6970s and use a gts 450 as a physX card.

With the right layout and board, it can be done. I've done it, but I wouldn't recommend it.
