I just bought the bulldozer 1820 to use as a multipurpose server/workstation. I plan on running 4-8 virtual machines for number crunching, and as a file server/web server etc..

I don't plan on running it too intensively. And I wont need graphics because I will remote in.

What would the best board/chipset be in this case? I need something that wont die but a 990fx seems like overkill.

I was thinking of going for 970 since I dont need the full graphics support of a 990 X or FX. But I've also heard the boards have a tendency to overheat with the BD 8120 if the board is too cheap and I don't want to risk that.

Most of the comments regarding this are in terms of graphics. So I'm wondering if there's any other reasons why you would get a 990fx over 970?

Well, 990FX has twice as many PCIe lanes, but I assumed you wouldn't use them if you don't even use a video card at all.

A bad 970 is a bad 970, but a bad 990FX is a bad 990FX. It depends on the board. You can check the reviews of boards sold on Newegg for users who use them in similar situations as you.
