Help with Standoff Range

I am currently frustrated by a battle that just took place over my
homeworld. One Bird Dark Wing equipped with a Super Laser attacked my
base. I (Stormers) had 17 Ill Winds equipped with PTTs and a standoff
range of 850, as well as 5 Deth Specs and some misc. ships.

The DW came in as a second wave, and some of my fighters immediately
started firing on him. Great, so far, so good. But my Ill Winds,
which started out hovering over my base slowly slid off to the far
upper right of the screen, while the DW slid in from the side toward my
base. One Deth Spec fired on it, but none of the other ships would
touch it.

My Alaska Refinery ship was floating there in the middle, and the DW
hit it with a weapon that (I'm assuming) killed the crew so it became
his. Immediately, the Ill Winds fired on the Alaska Refinery ship and
killed it, but still didn't touch the DW, just continued to move away.
Meanwhile, the DW starts to pummel my base with it's weapons for about
200 counts. Finally, a barage of shots from my Ill Winds takes it out
pretty easily.

I had all the ships set to 'Attack Enemy Ships' and 'Target Dangerous'
since I knew a couple of DWs were coming in for a desperate attack. I
also had upgraded my shields and Large Weapons through the exotic tech.

I'm frustrated that I lost quite a bit of my buildings, a TON of
natives, and some pop with so many ships against one! What the heck am
I doing wrong?

No problem, maybe I can help.

He used a tactic against you, Timed it so his second wave inserted into
battle and flew right past your ships. My guess is you are constantly
using the same angle to attack your enemy (ie top). He used this
knowledge against you.

Nothing he just did somthing right, buy abusing your common flaw.

Nope, I've actually made a point of setting each of my fleet leaders
with a different entry point, and changing them if they engage in a
battle. And he hadn't attacked my HW yet.

And even if it is just the angle thing, I still don't understand why
ships would just fly on by and not attack. Especially since it was
clear that as soon as my Alaska Refinery got converted, my ships
immediately fired on it and destroyed it, still not touching the DW and
letting it just pummel my base for about 200 counts, AND superlaser my
base shield. As the Stormers, if this happens again, I lose my HW
(can't build base shields). I have so many ships covering it that it's
just frustrating to think I might lose my HW to only 1 enemy ship that
my own ships refuse to fire on 'til it's too late.

Is there a different setting I should be using? Turn the standoff
range off? Use 'Strike Through'?

Thanks for the help!

Diplomat is your friend. Nuff said. That's the best way to figure
this sort of thing out.

But yeah if you continue to have this problem, I'd say either turn off
the standoff range or tone it down. If your worrying about protecting
your base you might just want to have them set to close to point blank
to take the ships aim off your world. Also since you have no base
shield start investing in Ion cannons to push those nasty ships away.

Turn all attack settings off.
Turn "Stand Off Range" : ON
Set Stand Off Range to be 100
Attack Vector: Random

BTW: Your Stormer T3 fighter are very effective in destroying big enemy
ships. So agaist a darkwing I suggest to use these.
