Are dual core processors still a viable choice when considering a new build? Quad-Cores seem to be the new thing, but I heard games are made to run on 1-2 cores! Thoughts?

More gaming titles are becoming quad core optimized as time passes. In fact there are now several dozen confirmed quad core gaming titles out there especially hard core flight simulators.Even if you use titles that are only optimized for 2 cores it can be beneficial to use a quad core (or more) CPU because you might have other processes running (like a scheduled virus scan or a automatic software update). One might be encoding video (get bored) and then decide to game at the same time etc.

Yes, very viable.

The dual core sandy bridge 2100 beats the phenom x4 and x6 in many situations.
It depends on the game, but faster/better cores is currently more important than many cores.
