I was looking to upgrade the cpu of my m6400 to an i5 or i7 and was wondering if the motherboard would support this change.

If i am not mistaken your M6400 should be using a mPGA478B socket witch does not support either I5 or I7.
Look at the following link for supported processors for that socket:

Assuming you mean the Dell M6400 laptop (you didn't specify...), then the answer is no. There is no Core i5/i7 which can fit into a motherboard using the Q43 chipset.

Yes I was talking about the dell precision m6400. Thanks for the feedback, it is much appreciated. As far as laptops go it isnt generally possible to upgrade the motherboard as far as I know so i guess il look into getting a new laptop.
