There is no comparision, the GTX 460 is supposed to be compared to the Radeon 5830. GTX 460 is much better.

even the lesser version of GTX460 still faster than HD5770. as helltech said, GTX460 is comparable to 5830. but try to avoid GTX460 768MB or GTX460SE. only go for the lesser version if your friend got tight budget and play at 1600x900 / 1050 and below

the GTX460 is slightly more expensive than the 5770 ..but also outperform it by some margin ..and yeah avoid the 700 MB variant ..you'll find it lacking in some games ..for example you'll find that in dirt 2 ..in one of the stadium ..even a 1 gig card will appear a little too less when the graphics are cranked all the way up.

the best GTX460 is the one with 1GB memory and 336sp (nvidia callled it as CUDA cores). there is plenty pre-overclocked edition in the market. you can try to look the one that matto17secs suggested.
