Hey everyone,
I'm looking to buy a large amount of broken laptops for a grid project
I'm working on. Preferably ones with broken screens and working
internals. So if anyone has an old trash laptop sitting around, let me
know.

I've got a Gateway 5300 600 MHz Celeron with a broken screen.
I've got a Compaq Armada 7770MT 233MHz Pentium with no screen.
Make offers.

Bah, right hemisphere but Stockholm is still a bit too far.
I'm after any old laptop with a 1GHz+ processor and broken screen to
use as a home newtwork server.
Hopefully, it'll cut my electricity bill right down as my current
'server' is my all bells and all whistles games monster which needs a
nuclear power station to keep powered up.
The other possible advantages other than powersaving would be that
it'll be small enough to hide out of the way (behind the sofa or
something) and hopefully be a hell of a lot quieter than my games
machine.

1GHz for a home server is massive overkill!
My home server is presently a (now) ancient Thinkpad 600X running Server
2003 with a PIII 500MHz CPU, 576MB RAM, an Hitachi 7K60 internal HD and a WD
250GB external USB2.0 HD. Also serves my HP 6P/MP laser printer and HP 7760
photo printer, and hosts my 11g WiFi for my "working" laptops.
Prior to that my server was a positively ancient Pentium 75 Thinkpad 755CD.
Ratchet your expectations down a bit and I daresay you could find a
relatively healthy PIII 500 - 750 laptop with a duff display for very little
cash. Check eBay for 600X, M700, etc., but stick with the better business
class of machines.
Servers are, by definition, passthrough devices and don't really require
much computational ability.

"Server" covers a huge amount of territory. How much power it needs depends
on the services it is providing. Don't assume because something is used as
a "server" that it doesn't need significant computing power.

True enough John, but we're discussing a home based unit here.

So? Think about a media server that's capturing a couple of analog video
streams simultaneously for example.
Don't assume. Think about it for a while and you'll likely find some other
residential applications that require significant computing power.
