I have a very old computer, and I was wondering what I should do if I wanted to upgrade the processor to an i5 sandy bridge and get a new graphics card.

Leave your system intact if everything works. For what you would spend, (new cpu, ddr3 ram, power supply, windows 7 coa) you could buy a new system. Frys has sold some basic emachines for $199 (in store only) that come with windows 7. To build your own, look for some newegg combo specials. They had a package for under $600 today that included everything but the operating system. I find new unopened windows 7 for $75 or less on craigslist.
