Its a low end card by todays standards, but it will still play most modern games on low/medium settings. Its also outdated due to only being DX10 (or below) compatible, Some modern games have DX11 feature's but can still be played on DX10/9 compatible hardware.

If your looking for cutting edge gaming performance and want to enable the latest graphical features then this card isn't for you, however if your a casual gamer and don't mind playing some games on low/medium settings then this card would be fine.

It depends on which games you are going to be playing. I have 2 HD 4850's 512s in Crossfire and I can run Starcraf2/WoW on ultra settings in 1920x1200 with little issues, but these are processor heavy games. As mentioned, for newer GPU dependent games you would be on low to medium settings especially on 1920x1200.

It is good enough for most games at modest settings but just be sure to keep the card clean and cool.

Metro is going to be cruel for an ati user due to physx if it is running off the cpu.

You'd get away with CoDBO and AC Brotherhood on medium settings, but Metro2033 is going to bring that HD4850 to its knees, you might get playble frame rates on low settings. Just.

I have never seen the 4850 2GB is it a 4850x2 ? This is different story all together.

They are usually oem and Gateway had a lot of them put in their machines that later showed up in large numbers on eBay. They were dual slot and used a simple aluminum block with a black showed that was featureless. the pcb was blue and featured only one 6pin connector. It was over all a very simple card. They had issues and would often fail for what ever reasons that may be. They used the same GDDR3 ram as others but having 2GB is what made them stand out.

4850 is a good gpu, you should be able to play any game at medium-high settings, look at this crysis benchmark (done in a 512 MB 4850).

HD 4850 is no way a low end card. Plays new game at medium-high settings very smoothly

I vouch for med range as it still offers better performance compared to higher priced cards despite it's power consumption.

If you do go for the 4850 make sure you have good cooling because they run hot. I threw a couple extra 120mm fans in my case and it was fine, but you definetly want good airflow through the case to keep them cool.

Well I actually would recommend a hd 5750 over a 4850 though

I have a 4850 512mb running at 1680x1050 and I haven't encountered any game that I was forced to use all low settings on. Even some new games have great performance, like Dead Space 2 where I was getting 70-110 fps with max settings. I'm going to be upgrading next month though, and I think you should save your money for a better card with games like Crysis 2, Shogun 2 and Skyrim coming this year.

WHAT?? With my HD 4850 1GB i play CoDBO on the highest settings @ 1280x1024 res, fps never dips below 40-45, Metro 2033 on the highest settings in DX10 (yes, very high) at the same res at a playable framerate, the only place in the game where i can't run it on very high is in the first level in the Library (too much light effects, shaders etc.)

Crysis Warhead - Enthusiast DX10 at same res, average fps = 28, which is very playable in Crysis. All this is with a low end quad Q8200 @ stock, and 4GB DDR2 RAM. Plus that 1440x900 is a little smaller res than 1280x1024, so he'll have zero problems running the latest games if he has a good cpu and enough ram.
