Only one port working on computer

My Compaq Presario is getting pretty old now (2006) but it's been really good, runs fast on the lovely and clean windows xp and I don't really want to get rid of it.
However for some time now, the cooling fan has been making a noise like a jet taking off, periodically, and all the usb ports except one have ceased working. Oh, and all the card reader slots. Can I solve this - and if so HOW - or am I making an expensive trip to the computer store this weekend?

You can clean out the fan/heatsink or replace the fan and clean the hs, should help with the tornado
can't suggest anything for the usb's though sorry,
you can always look at building yourself a newer rig and using that one for a nas/htpc/surfbox
