Hi everyone,

Yesterday I've had a little accident involving a half-full glass of water, a
not-so-quite coordinated gesture of my arm and the keyboard of my laptop
where the better part of the glass was spilled right over the right hand
side of my laptop's keyboard.

I've immediately cut the current of the thing (it has no battery), and dried
it with some cloths I had nearby. After that, I left it to dry for the
night.

When I booted the laptop this morning, I could not log on to Windows,
because the delete button was not functioning. After hooking up another
keyboard (external), I came to the conclusion that the entire upper right
half of the keyboard was not functioning. I then proceeded to dry the
machine again (gently) with a hairdryer, but to no avail.

Is there something I can do which will render me a valid keyboard again? The
laptop is an Acer Travelmate 522TXV, if that is of any help.

Any help is much appreciated!

Kind regards,

Princess Morgiah

Just plain water? Set the laptop or just the keyboard if you know how to
remove it, somewhere warm and dry for a few days until it dries out. I
have a shelf in my water heater closet I use for that sort of thing.

Try letting it sit for a week or so with power off, and set it in different
orientations.

If that doesn't work, what you do next depends on how comfortable you are
messing about with electronics. If you're comfortable taking a machine
apart and experienced enough to know what you're looking at you can tear
the machine down and find whether the problem is on the keyboard itself or
the mainboard--if it's on the keyboard you may be able to find a dead
machine of the same model on ebay from which to pull it, if it's on the
mainboard you're probably out of luck. If you're not up to taking the
machine apart then it's time to call a technician.

It's just plain water. Would it be ok to continue using the laptop with an
external keyboard? The heat from the laptop itself could help speed up
things, I guess...

Using any electrical device, whose internal components are wet,
isn't a particularly good idea!

No. This might very well turn a minor problem into a major one. Turned
off, electronics and water don't have any particular problems. Turned on,
it's another story, and not just in computers--had a rainstorm the other
day, the cable tunnel flooded, and the power company's big transformer
across the street blew out.

Since the machine appears to work normally with an external keyboard,
the MB is most certainly OK and the problem limited to the keyboard. As
suggested, let the machine dry a few days before you take further action.

At least it was just water.

The odds are not good, but in time, it may work again. Maybe. Probably
not, but maybe. It may take a LONG time to dry out (weeks). There's
not a lot that you can do which will change the outcome, either way.

I would not do that for a couple of days. There might be water in more
places than the keyboard. However water on the motherboard will be
dried out a lot sooner than water in the keyboard, which is a
"sandwhich" of 3 layers of mylar.

Well, first of all thanks to everyone who replied - just a quick note to
inform you all that I've still had no luck in getting the keyboard to work
again.

I'm just going to use the laptop with an external keyboard for the time
being....
