Hi,
I want to know if it is possible to mix between ram.

I bought an Asus P9X79 pro with a CPU I7 3820.
I also bought 4x4 Gigs of G.Skill DDR3-1600 PC3-1280
I am wondering if i can add my old Ram who is 4x2 Gigs of Corsair CM3X2048-133C9DHX.
If it is possible can you explain me the risks and the added value to my computer.

Thanks,

David.

There might be some issues regarding compatibility (maybe they won't work together)or one might slow the other one down ( let's say one is 800mhz and the other one 667mhz. the 800mhz will be slowed down to 667)

Ok but do you think it can hurt my motherboard/CPU?
Or is it risk free to give a try?

Yes you can mix ram I have but sometimes it caused instabilities and headaches it's always best to get the same ram in the same denominations that were Double Certified and tested by your motherboard's manufacturer to work with your MOBO.

16 gigabytes is plenty of memory unless you're doing serious image/video editing. If you're just gaming, there will be literally no benefit to adding more memory, while mixing brands can slow your memory down and make your computer less stable.

Don't do it.

I am a gamer but I am a programmer for profession.
This computer is my home computer and I want it to be a gamer computer but I also want to run a windows 2008 server on vmware that will hold Visual Studio 2010 SQL server 2008 and an IIS with live websites

Hi! I own a Q9400 cpu and the ram I use is mixed.. 2gb kingston hyperX 1333 and 2gb kingston kvr 1066, 4gb total.. The only thing I have concerned is that the hyperX has "downclocked" to 1066 in order to have the same speed with the kvr.. I have no problems till now, after about a year of using mixed ram. But in your case the 16gb I believe is already a great "amount" for memory..
