Common fault?

I have a Compaq presario model CQ60300 laptop and whilst downloading automatic microsoft download the screen and the whole thing shut down.Consulted local support shop who advised me the graphic card had overheated and" fried" the motherboard due to the poor location of the graphic card. They added that this is a regular fault with this model and compaq should be held responsible as it is a design fault.
Has anyone else had this overheating problem and did Compaq replace FOC

i know there is a bunch of geforce 8400 and 8600 chips that failed in most laptops using them. I think particular manufacturers recalled them, not sure which one. Check HP's website.

Powers up but thats it just a blank screen.

Try plugging in an external monitor and see if you see anything.

If you don't, then your laptop is done for. It could either be the graphics card is broken or the motherboard actually got damaged.

If it does show up with an external monitor, then you have an issue with your screen.
