They should work okay as long as they are the same speed.

if it physically fits then it will (or rather should) work. If they are not the same speed then they will all default to the speed and timings of the slowest stick of ram.

However, depending on your motherboard it may not support duel channel with mixed ram, or only support duel channel if the pairs are in banks 0 and 2, and then 1 and 3 (basically make the pairs one space apart from eachother). Duel channel is a 12-20% speed boost, so you should use it if you have it (and just about everything has it these days). The only real exception to this is if your board had Tripple channel (6 slots) or quad channel (4-8 slots on SB-E and some xeon boards) memory... but that is unlikely.

8GB is a lot of ram for most users (power users and gamers tend to use 4-6GB), and the only time you really need more than that is if you are doing major production work like large HD video editing projects, or 3D rendering work. So for simplicity sake I would simply remove the smaller ram and sell it, and then install the newer bigger sticks of ram and enjoy your 8GB.

as caedenv said it will work but slow down to the slowest timings. some boards will use the still use the ram in dual channel, up to the amount of the lower size stick and single channel for anything above that.
