I think it depends a bit on your price range. eBay is a good place to start
as completed auctions will give you a good idea of what fair prices are. If
you're looking for something under about $250, then just buy on eBay. If
you're looking for something more than that, then you should look for places
(some on eBay) that offer off-lease units that will have some kind of
refurbish/checkout and warranty with them.

You can also see if you have a local craiglist or marketplace
newsgroup.

I got my first used laptop on the local newsgroup a few years ago. It
was decent and only $150. Iwas very happy with it. Later, I loaned it
to my mom, and she fried it by accident.

So, I went to the local craiglist, and I found a really nice laptop for
$600. It's a couple years old, but still great features and
accessories. It came with two regular batteries as well as a 6 hour
battery. Very nice carry case, etc. It's a better computer than my old
desktop. And the seller turned out to be only about 5 blocks from my
house.

With local lists like this, you can find something at a reasonable
price, possibly talk them down on the price, and you can see it in
person before you buy. And no shipping fees.
