A few months ago the wife's CoolPix 2100 just decided to die without warning.
I liked the little guy - it was certainly easier to carry around than my big
Olympus, although I would miss the 10x zoom on the Oly. After talking it
over in this forum, I ended up just buying her a used 3100 rather than
throwing big bucks into repairing the 2100. The 3100 has been fine, aside
from the battery cover door not closing tightly against the body - not a big
deal.

Of course, the 2100 is still sitting on my desk, and is still as dead as
before. You'd think it would have healed itself by now!

It has occurred to me that I ought to at least see if the failure was due to
something really trivial - a misseated connector or a broken wire from the
battery terminal or something else that wouldn't take major optical or
electronic knowledge to remedy. In the worst case, maybe I could put the 3100
guts in the 2100 body to take advantage of its properly sealing battery
compartment.

Before I wing it: is there anywhere online I can see a parts/assembly diagram?
I realize actual service manuals aren't really available to the layman for
Nikon products. And is it preposterously stupid for me to even think about
taking it apart?

Appreciate any advice.

Hi there.

If the Bodies are alike, you probably only need to swap over the Battery
Compartment Doors.

Have you contacted Nikon about this problem? It could be they may repair
it more cheaply than you think or if not, they may be able to suggest
how to go about fiddling with the guts. If the american company plays
hard to contact or stonewalls you (which is usually the case) try the
Euro zone or even Japan. Check all the possibilities first before
tinkering with a working camera.
