i've tried the latest version just out. no good same type of problems. i'm at a loss

Its probably not a camera issue, you probably have viruses/ malware / bad registry problems. You didn't post specs so who knows maybe you running a windows cam on a mac.

Search the logitech site a little deeper. I can't remember off-hand, but all the older versions are still available through ftp site. That's what I did for a logitech pro 4000 camera.
