AMD Phenom II X4 955 backward compatibility

Hey everyone, my current CPU is an AMD Phenom X4 9650 in an AM2+, and I'm wanting to upgrade to and AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition, which goes in an AM3 socket I believe. I'm wondering: is this processor able to be used in an AM2+ socket? If so, will it hurt performance?
