I was right. Canon just announced the Digital Rebel XT. A junior
version of the D20 for $600 less. While I wanted a D20 I am now
wondering if it is really worth an extra $600 or am I better off getting
a DR Kit with a couple of extra lenses for the same total price.

Hi,
Jr. version as you say. Aren't you comparing an apple to an orange?

Compare the features..
See what the 20D has that the Rebel XT doesn't. If you *need* any of
these features, then go with the 20D. If the 20D has nothing extra
you need, then go with the Rebel..

There is no arguing the 20D is a very advanced camera. Unfortunately for
usability it is a step backwards from the 10D and a really poor relation
to a 1D mark II.
The most significant drawback I have discovered is mirror slap and the
subsequent fuzzy images it creates at shutter speeds the 10D used to
love. I have many examples of 10D shots at 1/30th, hand held with a 70
~200 lens, some at at full extension that are crisp and sharp. I don't
have many 20D shots under 1/125th that are as sharp.
This is like giving with one hand and taking with the other. On one side
Canon have given better use of higher ISO settings and then crippled
the camera so you 'have to' use the higher settings to get the shutter
speed into a sharper range. Pretty poor stuff, if you ask me. I'd say if
you really *must have* the 20D then buy it but otherwise go for the
cheaper one. It could take you a long time to come to grips with the odd
behavior of a 20D and if you live in a tropical region, you'll probably
kill the camera a few times anyway.

In a way, it's a corollary of the old saying, "If you have to ask, you can't
afford it." If you wonder if it is worth the extra $600, or $500 (I'm
betting the price of the 20D comes down a little in the time before the 350D
hits the market) it probably isn't. If the 20D has features that you
require, you know it, and can't live without them. I don't want this to
sound like a put down, and it isn't, but you'd probably be better off with
the Rebel XT (not kit) and a 17-85 IS. You could get that for the price of
the 20D body only.

Is it possible that you are mistakenly identifying motion (mirror-slap) blurring when it
could really be the additional pixels giving greater scene enlargement on-screen? --You
may be identifying the limitations of technique/glass due to greater enlargement on
screen. Remember...that the smaller the print (or screen presentation), the sharper
pictures with ALWAYS appear.
You might want to investigate this possibility...

The D20 is for lefties. All the controls are reversed, including the
logo.
