My extremely lucky friend is in a situation where his school is paying $6000 towards a PC. He sent me this build and I have tweaked it a tiny bit. He is getting it for solidworks, photoshop, proE, and autoCAD. I would think that getting a sandy bridge build would be better? Is it possible to do two RAID0s? One for the two Vertex 3s and the other for the two WD Caviar blacks. Also he says he is going to liquid cool it with danger den, which is not factored in and he will definitly be going over the 6G mark. But also taking suggestions on a liquid cooling setup. He is also waiting on evga to come out with the 3GB versions of the GTX580s that will hopefully have hydro copper. We were also talking bout maybe doing one GTX580 3GB hydro copper (if at all possible) and a quadro card (one that costs about as much as the 580 will) Then either doing one of two things, having each card connected to the Dell U3011 and being able to switch to either card thru the LCDs interface, or getting two 1080p LCDs and having a dual display. The focus of the comp is development, but he wants to be able to game at max settings too. Purchase is gonna go down mid-May.

not to complain but who cares? Your "friend" is getting his "school" to "pay" for a 6000 dollar pc... A) why do we care? and B) if youve got to blow 6k on a pc to get good performance youre doing it wrong.

Just like you're doing it wrong about complaining that I am doing it wrong. You're supposed to show me how it can be done better for those purposes listed.

Only thing I'd say is wrong is that you're building a half gaming box / half AutoCAD box which will not be optimized for either. It is very important to know what "AutoCAD type program" we are talking about. While many of the components for each task would be similar, many of them are not. 3D rendering and design really benefits from Quadro.....2D AutoCAD does just fine on GTX cards. The RAM appears to be CAS 8 or 9 Viper series.....not so hot for either, look for CAS 7 or even 6 if any still around. Your newegg links don't work by the way

Platform:

Gaming usage will favor 1155 platforn
AutoCAD 3D usage will favor1366 platform

GFX:

Gaming usage will favor hi end nViida GTX cards
AutoCAD 3D usage will favor nVidia Quadro cards

RAM:

Gaming usage will favor low CAS RAM
AutoCAD 3D usage will favor low CAS RAM

Here's some reading material http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=186228

Cooling:

Liquid cooling is a total waste on Sandy 1155
Liquid cooling is questionable on 1366

RAID:

Gaming is barely influenced by RAID or SSD's
AutoCAD can be significantly influenced by RAID and SSD's depending on memory configuration.

In short, a hot $6k 1366based AutoCAD box would get beat in gaming by a $1500 1155 based box.

Here's an entry level Quadro card @ $450

Here's a serious level Quadro card @ $4000

You or ya bud will have to decide what the primary usage will be based upon the specific apps used and then see what you can do to make it perform adequately in the other arena.

if i may ask, what exactly is he designing using this autocad? my feeling is that even though gaming cards might not be optimized for his particular usage, they will be more than adequate for his design needs. my guess is that an i7-2600k + dual gtx 590 build will meet all his cad needs and will allow him to brag to all of your stupid friends about how he can play Sponge Bob Square Pants: The Battle for Bikini Bottom at 1000 fps.

edit: if youre really into some high scale fraud, pay your friend $500 to get a "quad 590" "dual CPU" "dual mobo" build. Follow?

if thats the case...a 990x is the more suitable contender to be honest...but..if we look at the 115 platform..for a 2600k overclocked..you can rival the 990x..so, it really depends on what your friend wants.. I'm a big fan of the 1155 platform..it's currently what im using..but..i thought many times about ditching it for a black edition R3E and i7970...i can stick with that for years

okay so with that kinda of budget I would recommend spending a decent chunk on periperals get 3xU3011 (refurbished they can be had for $899!) some awesome cans (can't really recommend as i'm not really an audiophile myself) a topre realforce keyboard (elitekeyboards) mionix naos 5000, and a great mousepad.

for the real computer i need a bit more guidelines are you okay going with water-cooling, phase change?

For $6 K, get Xeon, Quadro 4000, ECC U-DIMM DDR3, SSD on raid. That's should "chew" up any software you use. Trust me.... i'm using that for visualization 3d refrigeration system in my school. Or if you want brag about it, buy an SR2.... see how it works.
