Hello,
I have been reading here and to be sure. I have a laptop and a tower
that I want to network. The reason for the network is to share files as the tower has internet access and the laptop does not. Don't want to change that. I have a switch and 2 cat 5 cables will that do it and if it does is it just a matter of plugging in? I am not entirely sure what I am doing, obviously.

they need an IP address in the same range - either by DHCP from a router, or manually assigned.

Then you need file sharing, and they should be in the same workgroup. Newer MS operating systems (assuming MS here) have wizards for this, or google windows file sharing.

if the computers are connected to the same router all what you need to do is to configure manualy the network adaption for example:
if your gateway is 192.168.0.1

1-tower network card
IP: 192.168.0.67 SUB 255.255.255.0 GATEWAY 192.168.0.1 DNS 192.168.0.1
2-laptop network card
IP: 192.168.0.68 SUB 255.255.255.0 GATEWAY 192.168.3.1 DNS 192.168.0.1
WORKGROUP FOR BOTH : homedata
