Parts Preferences: no refrense really. Usually an AMD/ATI guy but these days it seems Intel is killing AMD.

Overclocking: Minor overclocking. Maybe major as I build my computer skills.

Additional Comments: I'm aiming for $1,000 build. I have $50 extra to work with but I'm not sure what I can put that towards to get the most bang for my buck.

Like I've mentioned before normally I'm an AMD/ATI guy but with the Intel Core i5-2500k Sandy Bridge its seems you'd have to be stupid not to get it. Plus from what I've seen it seems to do well with overclocking. From what I could research and tell it seems that everything works with each other and is the most bang for my buck but I'm sure I overlooked something. And with getting Intel processor and Intel MOBO is it even worth looking for and ATI card. At the mid range cards for around $200 I kept finding mixed reviews of the cards in that range. So any help there would be very much welcomed and appreciated.

You may want to invest in a P67 chipset motherboard. If I understand it correctly, you need the P67 chipset to overclock your 2500k. You could save a little money on your monitor to get a better mobo with this one:

One ATI card you might want to consider is the 6850, about on par with the 460 and a little cheaper.

I like what you did with this build though, got a good system together on a reasonable budget.

Brought me to $1,002. If I don't plan on getting a bluray drive for my computer do I need a HD monitor? Because thats why I'm kinda sticking with the monitor I have. But if I don't need the HD then I won't care.

harder better faster stronger, slightly cheaper. HD monitors means higher resolution. It means your graphics will look sharper, and you will have more screen real estate. There are definitely better deals on 23" monitors though, but i dont give advice on cases or monitors anymore. But i will say when tomshardware recommends something, you should look up the article wherein it is recommended and read it carefully.
