Can a virus disable memory modules?

I bought my Dell E520 several years ago with a 4GB memory config. Now my computer says I only have 1GB of usable memory. Could a virus have disabled the memory modules?

Highly unlikely. What's more likely is that your RAM Chips are either dead, or not seated properly.

Take the RAM chips out and clean them with a pencil eraser. Then put them back in and lock them down.
