Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected device and

Hello,

I have a situation in which I am seeking some guidance. I was attempting to recover files from my external HD using Testdisk and in doing so after rebooting, have this message: "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected device and press a key"
I think I have deleted the MBR and do not know my way around the BIOS. I have no option to do anything but enter the BIOS. I am wondering if I can recover the original files or if they are permanently lost? I dont know how I can create a new partition (or restore the old one) through the BIOS and I dont have a reboot disk.. so I am needing some assistance..Please Help!!

  1. Is your operating system on your internal hdd or the external hdd? If you were using testdisk on the external hdd, the internal one should still be intact.
  2. have you tried disconnecting the external drive? Then, re-boot?
