Hi all,

Long-time lurker, first time poster. Go figure, my motivation to finally post involves a hardware issue :)

I am running:

Asus P5N-D 750i MB
Intel Q6600 OC'ed to 2.67 (not much I know, the MB doesn't want to OC much)
6 gb DDR2 800
GTX 560ti
Antec 650W PSU
Win 7 64

I purchased an Intel Q9550 off of ebay for a good price (or was it?)

However, when I installed, my PC would boot, and go to the windows start-up screen, then I'd get either a hardware failure notification, or the system would just reboot.

I've restored the board to factory settings via BIOS, checked for updated BIOS, and reinstalled the Q9550, all to no avail. The Q9550 is recognized by the MB in BIOS, and the CPU temp for the 9550 is listed at around 33 degrees, give or take.

When I put the Q6600 back in, everything runs fine.

Is this just a bad 9550? Does my MB just not like the CPU? Any help would be great!

Welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums!

It looks like the voltage needs to be checked on the CPU.

Get into the BIOS and see what the CPU voltage is set to. The voltage range for the Q9550 is 0.8500V-1.3625V per Intel - http://ark.intel.com/products/33924/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q9550-(12M-Cache-2_83-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB)

I'll give this a try when I get a chance, though shouldn't clearing the CMOS (and by extension changing all MB settings to auto) have fixed this?
