I live about 2 -3 blocks from city provided wireless access point. I
can pick it up on my laptop but the signal is just short of being able
to get on to the net. Is there no easy attachable, maybe USB type
antennas that would give me better reception?

USB type, no, but yes, there are external antennas. You need to get one
that matches your wireless card (the issue is the connector, different
brands use different connectors). If it's a laptop with internal WiFi,
you may need to use a PC card or a USB external device (one which has an
accessible antenna connector). By using a very directional antenna
(some of the best are homemade from tin cans), ranges can be extended
from 200-300 feet to as much as 5 miles (if such antennas are used at
both ends).
