Bill,

As I've already stressed, lens selection is critical if you are
discerning at all. Here are some review and comparison sites to help
with Nikon lens selection (or other brands if you navigate to other
parts of the sites.

http://www.photodo.com/nav/prodindex.html
lens resolution & MTF charts by professionals
this doesn't rate many new lenses, but it is very reputable

http://www.photozone.de/bindex2.html
"Performance surveys" (by users)
"Lens test guide" (not sure if by professional reviewers or users)
check out the 17-55mm/f2.8 G IF-ED DX (26-82mm equivalent)

http://www.photo.net/

A Nikon fan and owner site: nikonians.org

I know you're already familiar with DP Review. I believe that 2 highly
respected photo site, FredMiranda.com and RobGalbraith.com, are
Canon-centric, but I'm not sure.

Check out Express Camera's (New Jersey) price for the D70:
www.expresscameras.com/prodetails.asp?prodid=102123&sta...
I don't vouch for most NYC vendors' integrity or customer service

Canoga Camera on Sherman Way, 1 blk W of Topanga has the best local
prices (equal to B&H and Adorama in NYC), good customer service, and
good return policies. I bought a scanner from them and returned it two
weeks later .... no problem. Ditto for a zoom lens return.

Maybe you have not noticed that photodo is dormant for several
years already.

Recommended places to look at Nikon equipment are:
http://www.naturfotograf.com/ (Bjørn Rørslett)
http://www.bythom.com/nikon.htm (Tom Hogan)
http://www.moose395.net/gear/index.html (Moose Petersen, a few lens reviews)
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikkor.htm (Ken Rockwell)

There are also *numerous* Nikon fan and user sites, such as
the http://www.nikond1.net/.

I suppose we all know photozone, foremost the lens score
table, which Klaus calculates from review results published
by numerous photo magazines all over the world.

fwiw, bbb.org provides an unsatisfactory rating for express cameras in
edison, new jersey
http://www.trenton.bbb.org/nis/newsearch2.asp?ID=1&ComI...
and when you search the bbb.org by the web site name 'expresscameras.com' it
comes up with a company called photo king of brooklyn, new york that also
has an unsatisfactory rating and a history of unresolved complaints. photo
king has a web site called shopphotoking.com that no longer works... the
public internic directory list the address of shopphotoking.com as the same
as expresscameras.com (edison, new jersey). it lists expresscameras.com
anonymously (c/o registrar). good luck.

We've been through this before ont he rec.photo groups. If you see a
price well below B&H's, there's very little reason to trust it.

I would highly suggest NOT to buy anything from expresscameras. Not
only do you have to call to confirm your web order to ship it. Then
you have a sales guy trying to sell you something you don't want, your
on hold for about 15 min. and they won't give you a tracking number
once they do ship it. Then they ship you the wrong product. Finally,
they will allow you to return the product but you pay for a restocking
fee and shipping both ways. BE CAREFUL!! Shadie Company. Yikes!!
