Compaq keyboard problems

I have a Compaq Presario 2100 series. The keyboard has suddenly
started typing gobbledy gook. Some of the keys don't work. Some of
them will display a different letter or group of letters. I tried
reinstalling the driver, but to no avail. I now use a keyboard that
plugs into the mouse/keyboard port. And it too is occassionally just
stopping working for no reason. I can unplug it and plug it back in
and it works again.

I'm more interested in getting the laptops keyboard working, does
anybody know if this is a software problem, or is it hardware?

Is it difficult and/or expensive to replace the keyboard of a laptop?

Thanks for any advice.

Sounds like a hardware problem, and, unfortunately, all of the keyboard
circuitry is on the motherboard. The actual keyboard is nothing more
than a passive switch array.
