I wont bore you all with the background and excuses....

I have bought an asus p8z68-v lx and an i52550k to put in it.

Am I right in thinking I cannot use the onboard vga, dvi, and hdmi ports because my CPU doesn't have an integrated GPU?

I should have done my homework before rushing in!!

TIA

Not hard to make that mistake, most people think that a motherboard with display ports automatically has built-in video and nobody thinks of CPU's for graphics. Personally, I think any motherboard with display ports should have its own graphics chipset to spare the CPU from extra work, so your best solution is to just grab a decent card and you'll be good. Unless you're playing some super-intense games, a card in the 120-150 range should do pretty well.
